A York-Simcoe provincial election candidate has left the race.

The Trillium Party’s David Loft announced this week he is withdrawing his candidacy because his wife, Betty, has been diagnosed with cancer.

“We are meeting with the surgeons in the next two weeks to determine our path forward. As we take that path she will not have to look far to take my hand,” he wrote in a statement to voters.

Loft thanked his supporters and the other candidates, who, he said, “you can be assured … are here for the right reasons.”

There are still six candidates left in the race:

Liberal Loralea Carruthers

PC Caroline Mulroney

NDP Dave Szollosy

Green Alexandra Zalucky

Libertarian Silviu Druma

Ontario Moderate Franco Colavecchia
