The BWG Leisure Centre is all about trying something new - and the newest thing is the planned indoor triathlon coming up on April 6.

Registered participants will be challenged to a lane swim for 15 minutes, stationary bike ride for 15 minutes, and a run or walk on the indoor track for 15 minutes, with periods of transition between segments.

“We just have a lot of avid triathletes, and a lot of members interested in trying it, and getting their feet wet,” explained Stephanie Uren, fitness supervisor at the centre. The indoor triathlon not only provides training for triathletes, just before the season begins, but an opportunity for others to explore the fitness option and “work at the intensity that works for you.”

As Uren noted: “It’s manageable. It’s not overwhelming. It’s an event people can do!”

The indoor triathlon will take place from 3-5 p.m. on April 6, “piggybacking” on the leisure centre’s April Pools Day, a day of education on drowning prevention strategies, rescue techniques, and water safety skills for families, taking place from noon to 3 p.m. at the Lions Aquatic Centre.

Registration for the indoor triathlon is $30 per person; $40 for a team relay (where different individuals complete different segments) – and, like April Pools Day, the triathlon is a fundraiser for The Lifesaving Society’s Water Smart program.

“Our members are really great on getting on board for anything with fitness that’s a fundraiser,” said Uren, and so far, she said, “people are already training for this event. We’re getting a lot of questions – they’re asking, intrigued!”

Participants must be 13 or older to sign up, and must register before March 24 at the leisure centre.

The triathlon will be run in heats, with eight participants per heat.

“Right now, our first heat is full,” said Uren. “Spaces are limited!”
