Leisure centre's first indoor triathlon offers challenge, training, fun (7 photos)

Participants could swim, cycle, run - all indoors at the Bradford West Gwillimbury Leisure Centre

The Bradford West Gwillimbury Leisure Centre held its first-ever Indoor Triathlon on April 6 – a timed event that challenged participants to swim laps in the pool using any stroke, cycle on stationary bikes, and then run or walk around the indoor track.

Not every participant felt up to taking the three 15-20 minute challenges with only a five- or 10-minute break in between, so organizers provided another option. Teams could enter and turn the triathlon into a relay, with different members completing different parts of the challenge.

The event was a fundraiser for The Lifesaving Society’s drowning prevention programs, and it was held following April Pools Day at the Lions Aquatic Centre.

The Indoor Triathlon saw three heats, of eight participants each, sign up for the inaugural event. Some participants entered as a personal challenge, simply trying for a personal best. Others used the event as a solid training session for the upcoming triathlon season.

There was a unified message for everyone who participated: “Don’t forget to have fun,” said the leisure centre's Fitness Supervisor Stephanie Uren.
