Unique 7v7 football tournament coming to Barrie

Slots still available for inaugural tournament and camp; Event will provide exposure for local football players

A new football camp is hoping to provide exposure for the city’s gridiron athletes and there are still a few spots left.

On Friday April 19, Georgian College’s J.C. Massie Field will play host to the inaugural 7v7 football camp and tournament.

The event will allow up to 60 players to not just potentially showcase their skills in front of scouts and recruits, but also help learn the fundamentals in a fast-paced game.

Jonah Leichner, 18, told BarrieToday he loves the game and wants to see it grow locally.

“The main reason for the camp is for Barrie to get more exposure for football because I feel this city has so many great high school players and all they need is a place to be seen,” said Leichner.

“We see a lot of hockey and baseball, which are fun sports, but the high school level football is awesome in Barrie and we just need a place where kids can be seen.”

The event is open to high school kids aged 13 to 19; they will be split up accordingly.

Leichner and partners Nick Burns and Cameron Hoekstra have organized the event to be non-contact, 7-on-7 mini-games where they will focus on key positions such as quarterback, running back, wide receiver, cornerback, safety, tight end and centre.

There won’t be any special teams as the game times will be kept to a minimum to speed up the tournament.

Leichner, who plays football at Innisdale Secondary School, believes the event is worth the money and the possibility of being a part of something bigger.

“It’s only $25 for all that you get and we have contacted university football teams to come out and scout, so it could be very promising for the competitors,” said Leichner. “I don’t expect this to be the final event, so to get involved early would be special for sure.”

The camp is $25 and participants receive T-Shirts, pizza, games throughout the day and insurance coverage.

This camp is run by Super Elite Football, a company which hosts many popular football events.
