Mark your calendars — road resurfacing is getting underway in Bradford West Gwillimbury this August.

BWG council approved a staff recommendation Tuesday to endorse a $5.5-million two-stage construction plan for 2018 and 2019.

Phase 1 of the town’s South West Quadrant Roads project will take place this year and include road resurfacing, watermain installation, curb and gutter replacement, and sidewalk repairs for the following streets:

  • Maplegrove Avenue between Collings and Luxury avenues
  • Valleyview Crescent
  • Maurino Court

Phase 2, which will take place in 2019, would include road resurfacing, curb and gutter replacement and sidewalk repairs for:

  • Maplegrove Avenue between Maple Court and Collings Avenue
  • Maple Court
  • Collings Avenue
  • Gordon Court

A watermain would also be installed for the section of Maplegrove Avenue.

As well, work to improve Andrews Drive in 2019 will be put in a separate construction budget of $200,000, according to a town report.

The road — specifically between Cassells Drive and about 400 metres south — is in a “poor and deteriorating condition” due to underground drainage issues, which has lead to cracks and potholes, read the report.

The town has $3.9 million set aside from this and last year’s budgets for these projects, which means staff will request it cover the remaining $1.8 million to finish the construction work, read the report.

Along with the road work, the project proposes including raised islands with town trees planted at the centre around the cul-de-sacs of Valleyview Crescent, Gordon Court and Maurino Court.

The islands would add green space, act as snow storage refuges, and help with drainage issues for stormwater.

The islands — the inclusion of which are dependent upon further review — would be maintained by the town’s transportation department.

“There exists an opportunity to reclaim expansive asphalt surfaces and convert a portion into green islands,” read the report.
