Sunny skies and frigid temperatures for 13th annual Hockey Day in BWG (10 photos)

The U7 and U8 teams from the BWG Minor Hockey Association came out to compete in a fun outdoor game of hockey at Bud Brown Park Saturday morning for the 13th annual Hockey Day in BWG

Residents, local hockey players and area dignitaries bundled up and braved the frigid temperatures early Saturday morning for the 13th annual Hockey Day in BWG at Bud Brown Park in Bond Head.

The sun was shining as the U7 and U8 teams from the BWG Minor Hockey Association competed against each other in a day of outdoor on-ice fun. The community was thrilled to get back on the ice, after having to cancel last year's event due to the pandemic.

Mayor Rob Keffer, MPP Caroline Mulroney and MP Scot Davidson were on the ice early to drop the puck for the 10 a.m. game.

“It was great to see the community come out to celebrate the thirteenth annual Hockey Day in BWG. It brought a smile to my face to see the kids playing hockey with their friends as their families cheered along from the crowd!” said Mulroney.

Deputy Mayor James Leduc and Councillors Ron Orr, Peter Ferragine, and Jonathan Scott came out to support and cheer on the young players.

"You couldn't have picked a more beautifully Canadian winter day for Hockey Day in BWG," said Scott.

Afterwards, all hockey players each received a medal.

Hockey Day in Canada started in Toronto in 2000 and is hosted in a different Canadian town each year. The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury launched the local event in 2009 as a way to celebrate a favourite winter sport and bring the game back to basics with a fun, friendly tournament.

The day's event was sponsored by Tim Hortons.
