York Regional Police are looking for a group of people who broke into Stardust Drive-In Newmarket theatre and vandalized it by setting a fire on the roof of a building.
The iconic drive-in theatre on Mount Albert Road in East Gwillimbury posted surveillance videos on social media on May 17 showing multiple individuals on the property.
“Unfortunately several people broke into, vandalized & stole some of our property,” Stardust said on Facebook. “They also lit a FIRE ON OUR ROOF, which could have burnt the whole building down.”
The damage was discovered on May 15, around 10 p.m., according to York Regional Police.
The suspects removed a ladder from a secure storage unit, which apparently was then used to access the roof of the concession stand where the fire was lit, causing damage to the roof.
Three male suspects are wanted in connection with the vandalism and are all described as white, aged between 18 to 25, with thin builds.
Stardust, which remains closed due to Ontario’s COVID-19 measures, did not respond to requests for comment.
Their Facebook posts about the incident have been shared over one thousand times, with many people expressing outrage at what happened and hoping the suspects are caught soon.
Anyone with information, surveillance video or who noted suspicious activity is asked to contact police at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7141 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-tips or leave an anonymous tip online at www.1800222tips.com.
