INNISFIL - A 19-year-old Mississauga man is charged after a speeding vehicle passed a South Simcoe Police Service officer on Highway 400.

On Saturday, September 29, 2018 around 3:45 p.m., the officer was travelling northbound on the 400 approaching 4th Line in Innisfil. The officer saw a vehicle travelling in excess of the the posted 100 km/hr speed limit passing the officer.

Speed measurements of 150 km/hr dropping to 144 km/hr were obtained and the officer subsequently conducted a vehicle stop at the 4th Line. During the traffic stop the officer detected an odour of what appeared to be cannabis coming from inside the vehicle.

The officer seized a quantity of the suspected controlled substance. The driver was charged with Speeding and Possession of a Controlled Substance. He was released at the roadside with a court date in November.

There is no question that speed kills and we are committed to keeping our roads safe. The legalization of cannabis will occur on Oct. 17, 2018 and we will continue to enforce the laws as they are enacted.
