A stolen vehicle has been recovered and two teens from Newmarket are charged after a citizen called to report a suspected impaired driver.

On Aug. 9, 2018, around 8 a.m., South Simcoe Police Service officers were dispatched to a coffee shop on Bridge St. in Bradford West Gwillimbury. A caller reported that a driver had fallen asleep at the drive-through window and then parked in the parking lot.

Through investigation, officers learned that the vehicle had been stolen in mid-July from a home in Durham Region. When officers arrived at the coffee shop, they placed the two male occupants of the vehicle under arrest.

The 19-year-old driver and his 16-year-old passenger are charged with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime. While observing the driver, officers detected signs of impairment. After testing by a Drug Recognition Expert, the driver was further charged with impaired driving by drug.

Thank you to all the citizens involved in alerting police to a potentially dangerous situation. A crime vehicle has been recovered and an impaired driver is off the roads. This is yet another great example of how our citizens work together with us to keep our communities safe.
