Following the discovery of a body in a house on fire in Georgina last Saturday, York Regional Police have launched a homicide investigation.

Emergency crews were called to the residence on Miami Drive in Keswick at about 5:10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15. When they arrived, the house was fully ablaze.

"Once the firefighters had the ability to get inside the remains of the home and knock down most of the fire, unfortunately there was a person who was inside the house and they had lost their life," Staff Sgt. Mitchell said at the time of the incident.

Police have now identified the victim as the homeowner, 85 year-old Sandy Gauthier.

A post-mortem examination determined the cause of death was homicide.

They are appealing for witnesses who saw seen anything suspicious in the area or anyone who has surveillance or dash cam footage from the area to speak with investigators at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7865, or via email at [email protected], or you can leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, or online at www.1800222tips.com.
