Kempenfelt Drive in Barrie was closed Feb. 4 for a police investigation.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has concluded its probe into an incident in which a Barrie man died in February.

SIU director Joseph Martino has determined the Barrie Police Service did not commit a criminal offence in relation to the death of the 35-year-old man.

Shortly after 12 p.m. Feb. 4, police were contacted by a woman who said she had fled from a man’s vehicle “after he committed serious and violent offences against her,” according to the SIU report. The woman told police the man was in possession of firearms. She was taken to Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital for assessment.

The woman had left her phone in the vehicle before fleeing, so police tracked it and located the vehicle. When they arrived, no one was inside. They searched the area and, at 2:25 p.m., the man was located near Kempenfelt Drive and Nelson Square.

Officers tried to get the man to drop the shotgun he was holding, but he shot himself in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
