(Bradford/Innisfil, ON) The South Simcoe Police Service 2018 Festive RIDE program is launching on Friday, Nov. 30, 2018 with a new and important change.
The statistics are not improving. In fact the numbers of impaired drivers are getting worse. During our 2016 Festive RIDE Program we laid 15 charges. In 2017 that number jumped to 26.
So far this year we have laid 96 impaired-related charges.
Enough is enough.
For the month of December through to New Year’s Day, we will be conducting RIDE checks every day and every night. And for the first time, we will be posting on our website the names of people charged with impaired driving. The names will be included in a weekly wrap up of our RIDE checks.
We release names of accused people only in the most serious of circumstances. Impaired driving is one of them. We feel we have no choice but to take a tougher stand. We hope it will act as a deterrent. If we prompt even one driver to make the right choice – to think twice and make other arrangements - we will have bolstered the safety our communities. Lives are needlessly, carelessly and selfishly being put at risk because of the bad decisions of a few people.
Impaired driving remains the number one criminal cause of death in Canada and according to MADD Canada, every day, on average, up to four Canadians are killed in alcohol and/or drug-related motor vehicle collisions and hundreds more are injured.
