(Bradford, ON) A call about a possible impaired driver has led to an Over 80 charge against a 32-year-old Uxbridge man.

Police were dispatched to the area of Melbourne Dr. and 6th Line of Bradford West Gwillimbury around 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 12, 2018. An officer conducted a traffic stop and detected signs of impairment and an odour of alcohol. A roadside breath test resulted in a fail. The man was arrested and transported to South Division where further testing resulted in readings of well over the legal limit. The man was charged with Over 80 and released with a future court date. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded.

These are a couple of examples of great proactive work by police and a community member. The officer's due diligence and knowledge of the community resulted in an impaired driving arrest. A citizen made the right call by calling 911 to report a suspected impaired driver. Our  communities are safer when we work together. Safety is a shared responsibility.

CRA Fraud

(Bradford, ON) We continue to receive reports from victims and would-be victims of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) scam.

The latest case involved a 67-year-old Bradford man who received a call on Friday, August 10, 2018 from someone claiming to be from the CRA. The caller stated that the victim had committed a crime and must pay thousands of dollars or he would be arrested and taken to jail. The victim, believing everything that was said, gathered the money and left his house to meet the caller to pay. His terrified family called police after he was gone for two hours and wasn't answering his cell. Police managed to make contact and learned that the victim had driven to Toronto to deposit the cash into a Western Union machine in the Jane and Finch area as directed by the scammers.

The investigation is ongoing.

The aggressive tactics used by these fraudsters are aimed at causing panic among victims. Please know the CRA doesn’t make telephone calls demanding that people pay them via Money Gram, Western Union, or electronic money transfer. The CRA will never threaten arrest or send police.

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the CRA do the
following:

  • don't take any immediate action
  • hang up and verify the information or get a second opinion about the call from your bank, family member or friend
