Postcard Memories is a series of historic views, stories and photos of Bradford West Gwillimbury, a trip down memory lane on a Saturday morning.

A late snowstorm paralyzed South Simcoe County early in April, 1975 – dumping over a “a foot of snow” (over 30 cm) on the area. Winds gusting to 80 kmph piled snow into drifts as high as 4.5 metres, blocking roads, and closing businesses and schools.

There were numerous collisions reported in York Region, and in Bradford and West Gwillimbury, on the 400 and on Hwy. 27, according to the Bradford Witness – although none resulted in serious injuries.

Snowmobilers and tow trucks were credited with assisting police, in keeping routes open, but dozens of motorists were still stranded, as shown in the photo taken in Bond Head after the storm, from the April 9 edition of The Bradford Witness.

Details from the Archives of the BWG Public Library.
