Verona Travel has been in business for over 30 years, but the past two have been the most challenging with pandemic restrictions

While the world has been making efforts to mitigate the impacts of the coronavirus, many people have demonstrated symptoms of less sinister conditions — more specifically, the travel bug.

Some have an itch to get away since travel and tourism restrictions have prevented many from pursuing their plans abroad over the last two years.

The global pandemic has significantly challenged most industries but few have been as heavily impacted as the travel industry. The government implemented many travel restrictions with the goal of reducing the spread of the virus, both within and across countries. These restrictions have severely impacted travel agencies, hotels, and other hospitality venues across the globe.

Alfiero (Alfie) Cavallo, and his silent partner, are the owners of Verona Travel, a local travel agency in the heart of downtown Bradford. The agency is located at 30 Holland St. West, and has been serving the community for over 30 years.

When asked about how the pandemic has affected the travel industry, Cavallo said, “In general, our industry really got decimated. With all the restrictions, border closures, flights being grounded, it’s really caused a lot of damage and we are still trying to work things out to get things going. The amount of money that’s been lost is just incredible.”

As travel begins to increase in a hopeful, post-pandemic world, consumers are more frequently “skipping the middle man” when planning their vacations in an effort to save a few dollars. The constant restrictions and polices implemented by different governments have undoubtedly made it difficult to guarantee travel arrangements.

When it comes to travelling in a pandemic, Cavallo’s team at Verona Travel say it is helpful to book a trip with an agent. As Cavallo explains, “You have our service, that’s number one! Anything goes wrong, any adjustments need to be made, we do all the legwork.”

He firmly believes in upholding the main idea of a holiday, and that it should be an enjoyable experience from beginning to end. He explains how “pandemic insurance” has become an asset in making travel plans.

“Depending on your destination, [COVID testing] may not be a requirement upon entry. Coming home, however, Canada requires you to take a PCR test three days in advance," he said.

Cavallo further explains that pandemic insurance can significantly relieve the financial burden of such circumstances.

Although the percentage of positive COVID test results remains between two to three per cent, Cavallho says it is worth getting the pandemic insurance as it prevents added stress while enjoying your getaway.

The community support in Bradford has definitely not gone unnoticed in Cavallo’s business of three decades.

"The support [for our business] has been phenomenal in the town of Bradford. You really see a lot of mutual support for other local businesses. Also, [local businesses] are the ones who are going to give back and for example sponsor kids sports teams. If you support your businesses in town, your businesses in town will support you in return," he said.

Cavallo believes this is the best example of a revolving door of support.
