It’s 2023 and time to create those new year’s resolution lists. There are many things that can be added to our lists, and one should be living a healthier and cleaner lifestyle.

Nancy’s Nifty Nook can help you get started! Did you know that cleansing and healing the body can prevent toxic overload, which can lead to a variety of ailments and illnesses? Nancy explains that the buildup of toxins can lead to liver damage (toxic hepatitis), amongst other things.

Certified Nutrition Coach Phyllis A. Balch explains in her book Prescriptions for Dietary Wellness that environmental toxins seem to be a prevalent by-product of the frantic lifestyles that technology and the economy have forced upon us.

Toxins enter the body through the lungs when we breathe, through the skin by contact and through the GI tract from the food and drink that we consume. These toxins are then processed by the three major organs of detoxification - the liver, the lungs and the kidneys so that they can be excreted by the body with other waste material.

Nancy’s Nifty Nook carries a wide range of products designed to cleanse and heal the body over time.

How to reduce toxic overload

“The best way to reduce toxic overload is to cleanse and heal,” says Nancy.

“We need to rid the body of toxins and waste that accumulate, especially in our livers. A cleansing program is beneficial if done on a regular basis, which means at least once every two months.”

The benefits of fasting

Many Canadians incorporate fasting to prolong their life and give the organs a well-needed rest. Fasting has shown to help the body heal more quickly by restoring good digestion while promoting and quickening the process of elimination and peristaltic action.

Nancy explains, “Fasting cleanses the liver, kidneys and bloodstream, which allows for the body to flush out the toxins that have built up in the colon. Harmful bacteria and parasites flourish in a toxic colon and can cause malabsorption of nutrients, skin eruptions, bad breath and even body odour.”

The benefits of a juice or water fast

The digestive process consumes a large amount of energy.

“Consuming only liquids while fasting allows more of the body’s energy to go to the healing process,” says Nancy. Quality water or fresh juices can rejuvenate and nourish the body as well as the mind. Fasting for a few days a month is also a gentle and easy way to shed some unwanted pounds and maintain a healthy body inside and out.

If you are hypoglycemic, Nancy advises to always use a quality protein supplement such as spirulina, when fasting. “It keeps blood-sugar levels from dropping too quickly and helps to get rid of hunger pangs while supplying chlorophyll.” It should be noted that fiber and spirulina should not be taken at the same time as other supplements.

Before beginning any type of fasting or cleansing program, it is recommended to speak with a certified nutritionist and/or family doctor.
