What’s the worry?

Swimming is a great way to stay active and cool down from the summer heat but there are many weather-related considerations you should make before taking the plunge.

Many people think that thunder/lighting is the only weather you need to avoid if swimming and although it is the most concerning weather condition, there are others you should be aware of.

Rainy weather can be concerning. Although you may be safe swimming in the rain in your backyard pool, swimming in the middle of the lake in the same conditions is a completely different story. Heavy rain can create unsafe conditions for you to swim in. The combination of falling rain and the splashing of the rain hitting the water can restrict your view, causing you to lose sight of the shore or your vessel. For these same reasons, never swim while it is foggy out.

During the winter months, an activity that has gained popularity over the past few years is the “polar dip,” and although it has become a wintertime favourite in many communities, it can also be very dangerous, as the cold water temperatures can cause a person to go into cold shock.

Lastly, and although often overlooked, strong winds also pose a danger when swimming. Strong winds can create a whole heap of threatening movements in the water that can be very dangerous for even the best swimmers. From powerful and large waves, unpredictable currents, and decreased visibility, numerous things can go wrong when attempting to swim while strong winds are present.

Keep these important weather tips in mind this summer.

Stay safe and happy swimming!
