Pair of Innisfil residents charged after police say driver fled from crash scene Sunday

Two Innisfil residents are facing charges after provincial police say they fled the scene of a collision Sunday.

Shortly before 3 p.m. on April 21, Orillia OPP responded to a minor collision, where one of the drivers involved fled the scene, according to a news release.

The vehicle was spotted southbound on Highway 11 near Line 15 in Oro-Medonte, and officers commenced a traffic stop.

Police say officers suspected the driver was impaired by drug and said he failed a drug recognition evaluation.

During the investigation, police determined the driver and the passenger were in possession of stolen property. Two landscaping tampers were recovered.

Brock Buckingham, 39, of Innisfil, has been charged with operation while impaired (blood-alcohol concentration 80-plus), operation while impaired (alcohol and drugs), possession of a Schedule 1 substance (opioid other than heroin), failure to stop after an accident) and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing. His driver’s licence will be suspended for 90 days and the vehicle will be impounded for seven days.

John Thorn, 32, of Innisfil, has been charged with possession of a Schedule 1 substance (opioid other than heroin) and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. He has a court date in Orillia in May.

None of the allegations have been tested in court.
