LIVE: Ontario needs to 'do better' in battling COVID-19 in long-term care homes: Ford

Province announces new COVID-19 Action Plan for Vulnerable People; emergency order for Ontario extended to May 6

Update:

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says his government needs to "do better" in its repsonse to COVID-19 outbreaks in long-term care homes.

The premier pointed to the implementation of the COVID-19 Action Plan for Protecting Long-Term Care Homes, which aims to increase screening measures and additional support staff at long-term care facilities in the province.

There are currently COVID-19 outbreaks at more than 130 long-term care homes in Ontario.

Ford also announced the launch of the COVID-19 Action Plan for Vulnerable People Thursday, which will provide enhanced COVID-19 screening and other related supports for people living in homes serving those with developmental disabilities, shelters for survivors of gender-based violence and human trafficking and children’s residential settings.

Today, the province also announced that it's extending the emergency order until May 6, but Ford told reporters Thursday that there could be some positive news within the next day or so surrounding the re-opening of some non-essential services.
