Help local kids have an unforgettable Holiday with a Hero

Annual event ensures that no child goes without experiencing the gift of giving

The United Way of Simcoe Muskoka’s Holiday with a Hero is back for its third year.

First started in 2019, Holiday with a Hero is an event where children are referred to the United Way by a local agency and matched with ‘hero volunteers’ from Base Borden, local police, paramedics and fire services. Heroes then take their child to WalMart, where they receive a gift card to purchase gifts for their loved ones and something special for themselves.

“We always talk about the joy of giving but a lot of kids that come from challenging home life situations aren’t given the opportunity to give to others.” Martin said. “They get very excited about it.”

Afterwards, participants are bussed to the YMCA Innisfil by way of a convoy of emergency vehicles, to enjoy a pancake breakfast and activities including a visit from Santa and face painting.

While there, the gifts are then wrapped by volunteers and sent home ready to be opened.

This year’s event takes place on Nov. 18.

Not only is this event special because it ensures no child goes without experiencing the gift of giving over the holidays, but it also helps to nourish the relationship between first responders and children who come from challenging circumstances.

“The reality is children from difficult situations may have only experienced crisis situations with first responders,” Martin said. “So this really helps build trust, confidence and connection between the children and first responders.”

The first responders love it too, according to Martin. “They deal with some very difficult situations so to have a day all about fun is great.”

Holiday with a Hero requires about 50 volunteers to become a reality. This year, all spots are filled, but there are still ways you can help the United Way to make this year’s event a success.

“The budget of pulling this off is quite high of course, between providing a gift card to each child, renting the venue, food, entertainment and whatever else is needed,” said Martin. “So we’re welcoming individuals and businesses who would like to support with a donation.”
