A Newmarket man in his 60s is among nine more confirmed COVID-19 cases in York Region today — on top of the seven new cases reported this morning — bringing the March 22 total cases to 53.

No further details are provided regarding the Newmarket case, only that it is under investigation.

One of the additional cases is a Markham woman in her 70s who died shortly after returning from international travel yesterday, marking York Region's first death related to COVID-19 and the fifth death in Ontario.

The largest daily increase in confirmed cases brings the region's total to 53, as health officials prepare for the anticipated increase in cases as March break travellers return.

Additionally, a COVID-19 outbreak at Markhaven Home for Seniors has now been declared, which means anyone with symptoms at the facility is assumed to be a positive case of COVID-19.

York Region public health confirmed yesterday that a woman in her 70s at the Markham long-term care centre has tested positive for COVID-19.

Six of the additional nine cases reported this evening are in Vaughan, with the only details provided is that they are under investigation: three men aged their 30s, 70s and 80s; and three female aged in their 20s, 40s and 60s.

The confirmed case of a man in his 60s in Markham is also under investigation.

Of the 53 cases in York Region, 20 are in Vaughan; 17 in Markham, eight in Richmond Hill, three in Newmarket, two in East Gwillimbury, two in Aurora and one in Stouffville.

A Bradford West Gwillimbury woman is in serious condition with a community-acquired COVID-19 case at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket,  Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit confirmed yesterday.
