Two new COVID cases in Simcoe County today

The region's health unit is reporting two new cases of COVID-19 today. 

A new case in Orillia was discovered in a woman over the age of 80. She is only the second case in that age group reported in the Simcoe-Muskoka region this month. Hers is also the first case in Orillia in July, with the last local case reported on June 23. The transmission source for her case is still under investigation. 

Of all the municipalities in Simcoe County with an incidence rate identified by the health unit, Orillia's incidence rate is the lowest at 53.8 cases per 100,000 people in the population. The health unit has not listed an incidence rate for any municipality with fewer than 10 cases. 

Bradford West-Gwillimbury has the highest incidence rate in the health unit's jurisdiction with 288 infections per 100,000 people in the population. There have been 124 cases confirmed in Bradford since March 13. According to the health unit, 111 people have since recovered and 12 people have died, leaving one active case in Bradford West Gwillimbury. 

The second case reported by the health unit today is a man between 45 and 64 years old from Essa. He acquired the coronavirus through community transmission. 

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 639 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the region to date, with 608 of those reported in Simcoe County. 

Thirty-six people have died in Simcoe County and Muskoka and the health unit has reported 566 recoveries. The incidence rate for Simcoe-Muskoka region is 107.5 cases per 100,000 people in the population. 

There are 36 active cases of COVID-19 in Simcoe County including three people hospitalized, according to the health unit's July 22 epidemiological report.
