159 new COVID cases in Simcoe-Muskoka Thursday

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is reporting 159 new COVID-19 cases and one death in its latest update published Thursday, Dec. 16.

A Muskoka man between 65 and 79 years old died on Dec. 14 after contracting COVID-19. His case was connected to an outbreak.

New cases reported today include: 

  • Collingwood (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is still under investigation. 
  • Wasaga Beach (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is still under investigation. 
  • Barrie (66): Thirteen youth under 18 years old, 18 people between 18 and 34 years old, 11 people between 25 and 44 years old, 21 people between 45 and 64 years old, and three people between 65 and 79 years old. Six cases are outbreak-related, seven cases are linked to close-contact transmission, four are listed as community-acquired (no known link) and the rest are still under investigation.
  • Springwater (13): Six youth under 18 years old, one person between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and five people between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases are outbreak-related, two are close contact, and two are listed as community-acquired (no known link). 
  • Innisfil (11): Six youth under 18 years old, two people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Four cases are linked to close-contact transmission, one is outbreak-related, and the rest are still under investigation. 
  • Bradford (10): One youth under 18 years old, three people between 18 and 34 years old, three people between 35 and 44 years old, one person between 45 and 64 years old, one person between 65 and 79 years old, and one person over 79 years old. One case is outbreak-related and the rest are still under investigation. 
  • Orillia (15): Three youth under 18 years old, three people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, six people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases are linked to close-contact transmission, one is listed as community-acquired (no known link) and. there's are still under investigation. 
  • Ramara (2): Two people between 45 and 64 years old. Both cases are still under investigation. 
  • Oro-Medonte (5): One person between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, and two people between 45 and 64 years old. All five cases are still under investigation. 
  • Severn (5): One person between 18 and 34 years old, and four people between 35 and 44 years old. All cases are still under investigation. 
  • Midland (3): One person between 18 and 34 years old and two people between 45 and 64 years old. Both cases are still under investigation.
  • Tay (2): One person between 35 and 44 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact and one is still under investigation. 
  • Tiny (2): One youth under 18 years old and one person between 18 and 34 years old. One case is listed as community-acquired (no known link). 
  • New Tecumseth (8): Five youth under 18 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is outbreak-related, one is linked to close contact transmission, and the rest are under investigation. 
  • Essa (3): Two people between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 65 and 79 years old. All three cases are under investigation.
  • Adjala-Tosorontio (1): One person between 35 and 44 years old whose case is still under investigation. 
  • Muskoka District (11): Six in Bracebridge, one in Georgian Bay, three in Huntsville, one in Muskoka Lakes. 

Included in the new cases reported today are 57 unvaccinated, seven partially vaccinated, and 95 fully vaccinated people. 

There are 981 active cases in the region. 

Four people have been hospitalized since yesterday's report for a total of 23 Simcoe-Muskoka residents currently hospitalized with COVID-19.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 17,077 cases of COVID-19 with 15,812 of those cases recovered and 284 cases ending in death. 

About 75 per cent of the entire population of Simcoe-Muskoka has been fully vaccinated. Currently, 84 per cent of the population that is five years of age or older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine. 

Over the last eight weeks, health unit data indicates the rate of infection for unvaccinated, vaccine-eligible population of Simcoe-Muskoka is seven times higher than for the fully vaccinated population. The hospitalization rate is 16 times higher for unvaccinated vs. vaccinated. 

Since mid-October, there have been 67 unvaccinated individuals from Simcoe-Muskoka hospitalized with COVID-19. Over the same period, there were 10 partially vaccinated and 26 fully vaccinated individuals hospitalized with COVID-19.

  • A group home , declared Dec. 15, three cases.
  • Warrington Retirement Lodge, Stayner, declared Dec. 10, fewer than five resident cases, and fewer than five staff cases.
  • Four unnamed shelter in Simcoe County, one with six cases, one with four cases, one with nine cases, and one with 26 cases.
  • Waterford Retirement Residence, Barrie, declared Nov. 29, fewer than five staff cases and fewer than five resident cases
