16 new COVID cases in Simcoe-Muskoka since Wednesday, three in Bradford

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 16 new COVID-19 cases since its last update on Wednesday.

The new cases include 13 Simcoe County residents and three people from Muskoka District.

There are 65 active cases in the region. 

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 12,291 cases of COVID-19 with 11,553 of those cases recovered and 251 cases ending in death.

There are eight people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19 related illness, and there have been no new hospitalizations reported since Wednesday. 

The health unit has reported a total of 4,915 variant strain cases, with 27 of those still active. 

It can take several days to confirm a variant strain after a positive COVID-19 test result is reported to the health unit.

Today's update also includes the following information on variants of concern: 

  • 3,992 local cases have tested positive for the COVID-19 variant of concern B.1.1.7 (alpha), up four from Wednesday
  • 164 cases have tested positive for the P.1 (gamma) variant of concern, no increase
  • 32 cases have tested positive for the B.1.351 (beta) variant of concern, no increase
  • 56 cases have tested positive for the B.1.617.2 (delta) variant of concern, up four from Wednesday
  • 671 cases have screened positive (awaiting confirmatory testing).

To date, 394,408 Simcoe-Muskoka residents (65.2 per cent of the population) region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, and 182,520 people (30.2 per cent of the population) have received two doses.

According to the health unit, 37 per cent of the region's adult population (aged 18 and over) have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, and another 39 per cent have received one dose. The remaining 25 per cent is unvaccinated. 

There are two active outbreaks in the region. The newest outbreak is at a construction site, and was declared June 25. There is one case reported for the outbreak.  

The other outbreak is at a group home in Simcoe County, declared on June 8. There are six cases associated with that outbreak, which is unchanged from last week.

Anyone aged 12 years or older living in Simcoe-Muskoka region can book their first or second dose of vaccine online via Ontario vaccine booking system. More appointments are added regularly for clinics throughout the region.

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified). 

  • Innisfil (1): One person between 45 and 63 years old. 
  • Bradford (3): Two people between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old.
  • Wasaga Beach (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is listed as community-acquired (no known link). 
  • Barrie (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old. 
  • Penetanguishene (5): Two people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old and two people between 45 and 64 years old. Four cases are outbreak-related. 
  • New Tecumseth (2): One person between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 35 and 44 years old. 
  • There are three new cases in Muskoka District, including one person from Bracebridge and two people from Huntsville. 

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on July 2).
