34 new COVID cases in Simcoe-Muskoka region Tuesday

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 34 new COVID-19 cases and no deaths in its latest update posted Nov. 9.

The new cases reported in the region today are as follows:  

  • Barrie (19): Five youth under 18 years old, two people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, six people between 45 and 64 years old, and four people between 65 and 79 years old. One case is outbreak-related, two are linked to close contact, and three are listed as community-acquired (no known link). The remaining cases are still under investigation. 
  • Springwater (3): Two youth under 18 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is outbreak-related, one is listed as community-acquired (no known link), and one is still under investigation. 
  • Innisfil (3): One youth under 18 years old and two people between 18 and 34 years old. One case is listed as community-acquired (no known link) and the other two are still under investigation. 
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (3): Two people between 18 and 34 years old, and one person between 35 and 44 years old. Two cases are listed as close contact and one is still under investigation. 
  • Orillia (1): One person between 35 and 44 years old whose case is still under investigation. 
  • Oro-Medonte (1): One youth under 18 years old whose case is outbreak-related.
  • Severn (1): One person between 65 and 79 years old whose case is linked to close contact. 
  • Tay (1): One youth under 18 years old whose case is still under investigation. 
  • Essa (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is still under investigation. 
  • New Tecumseth (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old whose case is still under investigation. 

Included in the new cases reported today are 26 unvaccinated, one partially vaccinated, and seven fully vaccinated people. 

There are currently 300 active cases in the region. 

Twenty people from Simcoe County are hospitalized with COVID-19.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 14,338 cases of COVID-19 with 13,770 of those cases recovered and 268 cases ending in death. 

More than 73 per cent of the population living in Simcoe-Muskoka (including children) have received both doses of vaccine and 76 per cent have had at least one dose of a vaccine.

Active Outbreaks 

Current school outbreaks in Simcoe County include: 

  • St. Peters Secondary School, Barrie, declared Nov. 8, five cases
  • Unnamed private school in Simcoe County, declared Nov. 3, two cases
  • Willow Landing Elementary School, Barrie, declared Nov. 4, two cases
  • ECC Samuel-de-Champlain public school, Orillia, declared Nov. 3, seven cases
  • St. Catherine of Siena Elementary School, Barrie, declared Nov. 1, nine cases
  • Assikinack Public School, Barrie, declared Oct. 22, 16 cases 
  • Holy Cross Public School, Innisfil, declared Oct. 15, 29 cases

Other ongoing outbreaks reported in Simcoe County include: 

  • Mapleview Community Church, Barrie, declared Nov. 4, 16 cases
  • Unnamed childcare facility, declared Nov. 4, three cases
  • Unnamed childcare facility, declared Nov. 3, three cases
  • Unnamed fitness and recreation facility, declared Nov. 2, two cases
  • Unnamed shelter, declared Nov. 1, 21 cases
  • A second unnamed shelter, declared Nov. 8, four cases.
  • Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH), Barrie in the transitional care unit, declared Oct. 29: 11 patient cases associated with the outbreak, plus fewer than five staff cases.   

An outbreak Mill Creek Care Centre in Barrie declared Oct. 15 is now over (as of Nov. 8). There were fewer than five resident cases and fewer than five staff cases associated with the outbreak.

The outbreak at Central North Correctional Centre in Penetanguishene has also been declared over as of Nov. 5. There were 16 local cases associated with that outbreak.
