44 new COVID cases in Simcoe County on Friday

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 44 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths today (May 28). 

There are currently 575 cases in the region still active. 

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 11,834 cases of COVID-19 with 10,595 of those cases recovered and 245 cases ending in death.

There are 19 people from Simcoe County and one from Muskoka District hospitalized with COVID-19, which is an increase of one new hospitalization since yesterday. 

The health unit has reported a total of 4,530 variant strain cases, with 424 of those still active. 

To date, 303,522 Simcoe-Muskoka residents (50 per cent of the population) region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19. Of those, 34,139 people (5.6 per cent of the population) have also received a second dose.

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified). 

  • Collingwood (2): One person between 35 and 44 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is listed as community-acquired, and the other is linked to close contact transmission. 
  • Wasaga Beach (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old whose case was community-acquired. 
  • Clearview (3): Three people between 18 and 34 years old. One case is outbreak-related.
  • Springwater (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is outbreak-related. 
  • Barrie (14): Two youth under 18 years old, eight people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, two people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person over 79 years old. Three cases are outbreak-related and seven are linked to close contact transmission. 
  • Innisfil (4): One youth under 17 years old, two people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact transmission. 
  • Bradford (7): Four youth under 18 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and two people between 45 and 64 years old. Three cases are linked to close contact transmission. 
  • Orillia (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old. 
  • Tiny (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old.
  • Essa (3): Three youth under 18 years old.
  • New Tecumseth (7): Two youth under 18 years old, four people between 35 and 44 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. One case is linked to close contact transmission.

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on May 28).
