The Helping Hand Food Bank in Bradford has seen an increase in the number of families applying for assistance at Christmas time this year.

To help ensure that Santa brings gifts for all of the children, Bradford District High School (BDHS)  organizes an Adopt-a-Family campaign every year.

Classes are ‘adopting’ families and working together to raise the money to buy gifts for each child. Some will be shopping online to make their purchases.

Teacher Erica Russell bought snacks for her class to purchase, selling chips, chocolates and other candies for 25 cents to 50 cents, to help raise funds.

Russell found that students who come from families facing financial restraint tend to donate more, “because they understand why it’s so important.”

BDHS has held several bake sales, to help with the fundraising efforts. The Student Council plans to host another bake sale for Adopt-a-Family next week, on Dec. 19.

Students at the high school have ‘adopted’ 15 families so far – many of them with four or five children – but there are still many families with no sponsors.
