'Amazing' Side By Side By Sondheim coming to Cookstown in May

The combination of music, choreography and spoken word will 'make for a very entertaining evening,' officials say

The South Simcoe Theatre is excited to bring Side by Side By Sondheim, an "amazing musical revue" to the Cookstown stage.

Simple and unpretentious, Side by Side By Sondheim is a Tony Award-winning musical that is a perfect introduction to the work of the late, great Stephen Sondheim and a must for diehard fans.

In this revue of his earlier work, some of his most lush, unforgettable songs are presented in one magical evening. Featuring music from Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone Can Whistle and Pacific Overtures, as well as classics written with musical theatre giants, Leonard Bernstein, Jule Styne and Richard Rodgers, (West Side Story, Gypsy and Do I Hear A Waltz?) this dazzling array of some of Sondheim's best-known songs will thrill musical theatre lovers of all ages.

A narrator will guide you through the performance, relating interesting stories between the numbers. Some of these tidbits relate to the shows from which the songs come, while others focus on information about Sondheim’s life and career. The combination of music, choreography and spoken word make for a very entertaining evening.

The show is directed by Scott Hurst. Music director is Edwina Douglas, while the show is produced by Richard Birch and Mel Hinch.

Opening night is Thursday, May 4 at 8 p.m., and the show runs until May 21, 2023. Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m.

Please note that The South Simcoe Theatre, located at 1 Hamilton St. in Cookstown, no longer requires vaccination passports but does suggest wearing a mask for everyone’s safety.
