Big ideas in tiny art at Cookstown show

Proving that good things really do come in small packages...

Small is beautiful.

It can also be cute, intriguing, intricate, powerful - and even surprisingly monumental.

The 6 x 6 x Cookstown Art Show is proof.

The third annual show of miniature art, every work measuring a maximum of six inches by six inches, is currently on display at Halliday House & Co. in Cookstown. Organizers Maggie Grace and Christina Luck – both of them local artists with entries in the show – have invited more than a dozen other artists to submit works.

The result is a delightful exhibit, in the windows and on the walls at Halliday House, that ranges from the crystal balls created by Eileen Cooper, to paintings, soft sculptures, mixed media works, and the silver gelatin prints of internationally-known photographer, Diana Harding Tucker.

Bradford West Gwillimbury artist Denis Bolohan, known for his landscaped labyrinths, has created miniature labyrinths on blind-embossed paper.

June Chambers of Bond Head has translated her interest in fabric art into fun mixed-media miniatures, based on the concept of quilt blocks.

Prices range from $10, to over $300 for the original works, with most available for well under $100 – prices as tiny as the artworks themselves.

Halliday House, located at 9 Queen St. in Cookstown, is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday and will be open late until 7 p.m. on Nov. 30, for Cookstown’s Light Up Night. The show 6 x 6 x Cookstown continues to Dec. 7.

The store will also be open from 6 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 21, for a Meet-the-Artists Reception – an opportunity to view the works, chat with the artists, and purchase unique, tiny gifts.
