Bradford West Gwillimbury residents will see a 2.34 per cent tax hike this year, council voted Tuesday evening.

Although it is an overall increase, the municipal portion that town council approved was actually -1.34 per cent. Including library and special capital levy costs, that amounts to $17.38 per home.

“That is stellar compared to our neighbouring municipalities,” said Coun. Gary Baynes during last night’s council meeting. “This is the second-largest growing community in Ontario (behind Milton). I, for one, am very proud of the work we did in the budget.”

In addition to the municipal portion of the budget, South Simcoe police, Simcoe County and education make up the rest of the increase, bringing it to an extra $104.77 per average home assessed at $481,000.

The police budget was submitted to BWG council in December, with a 0.59 per cent increase, or an extra $3.34 for the average household.

The county and education tax numbers have not yet been finalized, but are expected to be by mid to late March.

The Town of BWG has estimated their increases as 4.06 per cent for school boards, and 4.17 per cent for the county.

As well, BWG residents can expect a 2.55 per cent increase for water and wastewater services for residential customers.

“We tried to be creative and find ways to meet efficiencies,” said Mayor Rob Keffer.
