Bradford kids take wet and wacky LEGO challenge (3 photos)

Kids made boats out of LEGO and tested their seaworthiness

There’s only one more Tuesday in July – and one more day for the LEGO Club Summer Challenge, when LEGO enthusiasts of all ages are invited to drop by the library and use the collection of LEGO blocks and kits to make something special.

This past Tuesday was Float a Boat day. The challenge: to create a boat out of LEGO pieces that would float – at least, for a little while.

Kids used their imagination and creativity to create boats that looked like boats, but also like bricks, islands, skidoos, trains and pancakes. They then brought them to children’s services librarian Andrea Ciurria to test their seaworthiness in a plastic container filled with water.

It was a learning experience for the young engineers. Ciurria explained about centres of gravity, weight, displacement of water, and surface area. And when a ‘boat’ sank, congratulated the creator for making “an island for the mermaids!”

There was only one disappointment. When kids asked, “Can I bring this home?” Ciurria had to tell them, “We don’t get to bring them home. We just get to build them here every week.”

The next and final LEGO Club summer challenge – making marble mazes – takes place Tuesday, July 31 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the Zima Room of the Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library.
