The Bradford Lions Club is all about giving back to the community.

Lions fundraisers support the Helping Hand Food Bank and the Santa Claus Parade; contribute hundreds of thousands of dollars to recreation in Bradford West Gwillimbury – for the Lions Aquatic Centre at the BWG Leisure Centre, and the fieldhouse at Henderson Memorial Community Park, for just two examples; and support numerous other local causes.

But the Lions also host community events, just to “give back” – like the annual Pancake Breakfast with Santa, and this Saturday’s Beat the Blahs Dinner and Dance.

“It’s just because,” said Lions Club member Jim Slykhuis. Because it’s February, because people are tired of winter, because people need to get out, have fun, and perk up.

“I’m just done, totally done with winter,” said Slykhuis.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 23 at the Bradford and District Memorial Community Centre, 125 Simcoe Rd.

There will be a roast beef dinner at 6 p.m., with a cash bar, followed by music and dancing to Scaraoke Entertainment. Tickets are $25 per person, available from any Bradford Lions Club member, or at the door.

“We need spring to get here,” said Christine Slykhuis, and an evening out can be a breath of spring, even when the weather is still wintry.

Lions Beat the Blahs Dinner and Dance should be a great antidote – and “a good time!” said Jim Slykhuis.
