Bradford raises flag for Portugal Day (9 photos)

Portugal Day is celebrated worldwide on June 10

On Wednesday afternoon, Mayor Rob Keffer along with members of the Portuguese community in Bradford took part in an intimiate, socially distanced flag raising event to celebrate Portugal Day outside the Bradford Courthouse.

"It is a little quieter this year," noted Mayor Keffer about the small crowd due to COVID-19 gathering restrictions. But was pleased to see a few Portuguese supporters standing in the parking lot across the street with their Portuguese flags.

He noted how important the Portuguese community is to the town.

"They are hardworking, family-oriented people of Portuguese decent that are here in Bradford, great sport enthusiasts as well," he said.

"They really add a lot to our community, so thank you so much."

He read the following proclamation, followed by the raising of the flag:

WHEREAS: Portugal Day is celebrated around the world every year on June 10; and
WHEREAS: The Portuguese Cultural Centre of Bradford was established in 1983 in the Town of Bradford as a gathering place for the Portuguese community; and
WHEREAS: One of the mission statements of the Centre is to promote the Portuguese culture through religious festivals, educational seminars
and various community events; and
WHEREAS: Proud Portuguese Canadians have chosen Canada, namely Bradford West Gwillimbury, as a future for their families and their children.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That His Worship Mayor Rob Keffer and Members of Council proclaim June 10, 2020 as PORTUGAL DAY in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury
