In case Bradford West Gwillimbury council becomes a “lame duck,” the town is ready.

A lame duck council would occur if the newly-elected council after this fall’s municipal election is made up of less than ¾ of the members of the outgoing council.

BWG council voted Tuesday to approve a staff report on what a lame duck council is not allowed to do.

This includes being restricted for a time from doing several acts: appoint or remove from office any officer of the municipality, hire or fire any municipal employee, dispose of any real or personal property of the municipality that exceeds $50,000, and purchase anything or incur any other liability exceeding $50,000.

These restricted acts would be for a limited amount of time, which will be determined either by election day Oct. 22, or between then and Nov. 30, which is the end of the current council term.

The town’s committee of the whole approved the report June 5 before coming to council for final approval Tuesday.
