Bradford residents get a taste of the Caribbean

The next festival for the Bradford Farmers’ Market is Peach Fest in August

The Bradford Farmers’ Market offered shoppers a taste of the Caribbean this past Saturday.

There was a Mango Madness sauce at Everything Maple & More, Jamaican rum pecan pie and tarts at Sweet Annabella’s, jalapeno bagels or pretzels and a spiced rum raspberry donut at The Polish Bakery, while Paula’s Country Cooking served up jerk chicken, curry and roti, and the Kaszak-Stand offered beef patties and an upside-down pineapple rum cake.

It was all part of Caribbean Fest at the market.

The Kaszak-Stand has nothing to do with Eurasia, Kazakhstan, or former Russian states. It’s the creation of Natalie Dubé, the chef behind the delectable home-cooked foods, and her husband, Waleed Kaszak.

It is Waleed who slices and serves up the food created by his wife of 20 years, and gives the stand his name.

In addition to the Caribbean tributes of patties and rum cake, Dubé also created a Scapes Pizza, featuring marzano tomatoes, garlic scapes and mozzarella cheese, as well as her signature pizza — olive oil, caramelized onions, grilled asparagus, balsamic glaze and parmesan.

“We use everything local — we buy our produce from Shane (Singh, the owner of Springh Farms),” said Waleed.

The couple handed out free samples that had passers-by saying, “My goodness!”

Adding to the summer fun, Kenn Lewis gave popular tunes a Caribbean twist on his steel drum.

The Bradford Farmers’ Market takes place every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. beside the Bradford library, 425 Holland St. W., rain or shine.

Mark your calendar for the next big event at the market: the Peach Festival on Aug. 25, when Elvis will entertain.
