Barrie firefighters are battling a large industrial fire at Superior Propane on Bayview Drive in the city's south end this afternoon.

A Barrie police officer at the scene confirmed the fire is at Superior Propane.

"The concern right now is the big tanks," the officer told BarrieToday

Businesses are being evacuated on Saunders and Lockhart roads.

Emergency officials have cleared a one-kilometre area around Superior Propane at Bayview Drive and Lockhart Road.

"We have the fire knocked down at this time, we're just working on spot fires in the area," said Carrie Clark, the city's deputy fire chief. "We don't have an origin and cause yet because we're still in firefighting mode."

The evacuation was called to follow the city's response plan for the industrial fire.

Clark was unable to say the extent of the damage but did confirm that there were no injuries.

Two Barrie Transit buses have been brought to the scene to assist with the evacuation.
