Bring your appetite to Savour Simcoe this Friday

Event aims to serve up a sampling of food and beverages from Bradford, Newmarket and Alliston retirement homes

Residents can enjoy a taste of what it’s like at five local retirement homes this Friday.

Bradford’s Holland Gardens and The Elden have teamed up with Amica in Newmarket, Kingsmere in Alliston and The Roxborough in Newmarket to offer Savour Simcoe at The Danube Seniors Leisure Centre at 715 Simcoe Rd. in Bradford, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 27.

The event aims to serve up a sampling of food and beverages from the homes including such culinary delights as roasted turkey stew with garlic mashed potatoes, Arnold Palmers and a pumpkin tartlet from Holland Gardens, as well as butter chicken, spiced lattes and a ginger caramel cake from The Elden.

“Believe it or not, we do serve these in retirement. People just don’t think we do,” Melissa McKee, community relations manager at Holland Gardens said.

As the event also features entertainment, door prizes and free promotional items, McKee hopes it will help break the stigma around retirement living and open people’s eyes to what the various homes have to offer.

“It’s not what your grandparents remember long-term care to be; this is a cruise ship minus the water,” McKee said.

If the inaugural event goes well, she’s hoping it could become semi-annual in both the spring and the fall.

Admission is $5 at the door, with proceeds going to the Helping Hand Food Bank. While the event is aimed at the retirement crowd, anyone is welcome to attend.

That said, space is limited and 70 spots have already been reserved, so anyone interested in attending is encouraged to reserve their spot ahead of time by calling 905-716-6980.
