CADETS' CORNER: Group is 'backbone of Air Cadet movement'

Volunteer Squadron Sponsoring Committee works with staff to ensure the needs of the program are met through fundraising, facilities, materials and support

Cadets’ Corner is a weekly column submitted by the 37 Orville Hand air cadets group.

The Squadron Sponsoring Committee (SSC) is often described as the “backbone of the Air Cadet movement” because one of the real secrets to the success of an Air Cadet Squadron is a well organized and effective SSC.

The SSC works in partnership with 37 Squadron staff to ensure the viability of the squadron.

The support is intended to compliment the resources available from the Canadian Armed Forces. The squadron is supported through various forms of voluntary personal involvement, financial contributions, the provision of extra activities for the cadets, and other material assistance.

The Sponsoring Committee works in partnership with the squadron officers to organize and conduct local training program in compliance with the three goals of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets to develop leadership and good citizens, to promote physical fitness and to stimulate an interest in aviation.

The Sponsoring Committee is responsible for: providing suitable accommodation for cadet training and activities; promoting the cadet program to the community; fundraising and managing the squadron’s funds and bank account (including maintaining charitable organization status); and ensuring that cadets are evaluated and treated fairly.

The Squadron Sponsoring Committee is comprised of volunteer members of the community with an interest in the goals of the Air Cadet program. The committee works with the squadron staff to ensure that the needs of the program are met through fundraising, facilities, materials and support.  As partners in the cadet program, our Sponsoring Committee is a critical component in the successful training of our cadets.

The 2022-2023 Squadron Sponsorship Committee members are:

  • Ron Lock, Chair
  • Tammy Paglia, Treasurer
  • Luisa Pinto, Secretary
  • Ruth Brooks, Support Member
  • Allan Saunders, Canteen
  • Mandi Turner, Royal Canadian Legion Liaison/PRO

The Bradford Air Cadets are very lucky to have Branch 521 Royal Canadian Legion as our primary sponsor and the drive behind bringing the cadet program to our community.
