CADETS' CORNER: Local cadets impress at annual review

Numerous cadets receive awards during event in Bradford

Cadets’ Corner is a weekly column submitted by the 37 Orville Hand Air Cadet Squadron.

There was a wonderful closing to a great training year for the 37 Orville Hand Air Cadet Squadron.

Sunday saw pride and joy for many parents as they sat in the stands at the Bradford and District Community Centre, watching as their sons and daughters took part in an annual review, some for the first time.

First-year cadet Cpl. Cini MCed the event while Regional Cadet Support Unit member and reviewing officer Maj. Ryan Schwarz, CD, inspected each cadet as he walked through the ranks with 37 Squadron’s commanding officer, Lynda Holowatyj, CD, alongside him. Both Snowbird Flight and Arrow Flight were at full attention for their inspection and Maj. Schwarz appeared impressed.

Following the inspection, some awards were presented to the cadets.

  • Fundraising Award for the cadet who showed the best effort in fundraising: Flight Cpl. Arora
  • Top Instructor Award presented to the cadet who demonstrated the preparation and delivery of instruction in the cadet training program: Flight Sgt. Xu
  • Squadron Dedication and Spirit for the dedication and enthusiasm and general goodwill toward fellow cadets: Flight Cpl. Arora and Flight Cpl. Gallagher
  • Most Proficient First-Year Cadet for the cadet who has best adapted to the air cadet program and has performed through attendance, commitment and effort to a standard well above the norm: Cadet White
  • Top Athletic Cadet Award for the top three athletic cadets based on the Canada Fitness Assessment and participation in squadron activities: Cadet Rosw, Cpl. Papillon and Cpl. Medvedeva
  • Leadership Award, awarded to the cadet who best exemplifies leadership qualities at the rank of sergeant or above: Flight Sgt. Sellers
  • Volunteer Award, awarded to the cadet for the most active volunteer with the poppy campaign, No Stone Left Alone, tree planting and fall tag days: Flight Cpl. Arora

  • Junior Leadership Award, presented to a cadet who best exemplifies leadership qualities at the rank of flight corporal or below: Flight Cpl. Arora
  • Effective Speaking Competition Award: Flight Sgt. Xu and Cpl. Cini
  • Graduation certificate, presented to cadets who have completed all of the modalities of the air cadet program: WO2 Lotter, Flight Sgt. McLaughlin and WO2 Weir, who have all been with 37 Squadron since the formation in Bradford five years ago.

A breath was let out in relief when the ceremony came to an end and the cadets could enjoy some treats while being congratulated by family and friends on a job well done.
