Carrot Fest Friday moves ahead despite traffic complaint

‘The townspeople want you to spend their tax dollars and ease congestion and get rid of traffic jams. They don’t want to save money by orchestrating one,’ a Bradford West Gwillimbury resident told council

After one Bradford West Gwillimbury resident complained to the town about the traffic headache caused by Carrot Fest Friday, council is moving ahead with the festival’s usual road closures.

BWG council approved this week all the temporary road closures for special events in 2019, including Carrot Fest on Aug. 16-17.

“It became clear (during the last municipal election) the townspeople are fed up with the amount of traffic they are faced with. You all made promises to address it,” resident Michael Walsh told BWG council in February.

“The townspeople want you to spend their tax dollars and ease congestion and get rid of traffic jams. They don’t want to save money by orchestrating one.”

Walsh suggested at the time the town change the festival to Saturday and Sunday to help relieve traffic congestion caused by closing Holland Street during rush hour on the Friday.

Sections of Holland and Barrie streets and Simcoe Road in downtown BWG will be closed from the Friday at 1 p.m. until Sunday at 3 a.m.

While some councillors told Walsh at a February council meeting they are not opposed to investigating Sunday as a future possibility, they argued that local businesses need the Sunday off from work and overall traffic issues would not be eliminated by moving the date.
