Celebrating 65 years of marriage and teamwork

Trevor and Sylvia Luxton celebrated their 65^th Wedding Anniversary on Sunday, at the Bond Head United Church – surrounded by friends and family.

Bradford West Gwillimbury Mayor Rob Keffer presented a certificate of congratulations to the couple, who now live in Newmarket.

The Luxtons moved to the Roxborough Retirement residence in Newmarket, some time before Bradford saw the construction of its own retirement residences, The Elden of Bradford and Holland Gardens.

But for 15 years, the Luxtons were a team in BWG, volunteering at the Danube Seniors Leisure Centre, helping to establish Community and Home Assistance to Seniors (CHATS) in Bradford, organizing seniors’ day events and fairs.

Sylvia Luxton was instrumental in persuading then-Mayor Frank Jonkman Sr. to accept the donation of the Danube Centre from the Danube Counties German Club, and transform the building into a handicapped-accessible social centre for BWG’s senior residents, promoting fitness and social activities.

And for years, she was the Provincial Good Neighbours Ambassador, maintaining a program that built a network of caring in the municipality, to support vulnerable residents and promote the concept of being a “good neighbour.”

Although they have moved, the Luxtons continue to be connected to BWG, attending special events and activities, and the Bond Head United church.

The Luxtons marked their anniversary with a family celebration in Aurora on Saturday, and a cake-cutting at church on Sunday, when they also received certificates from the Lieutenant Governor, Governor General, and Queen Elizabeth II.
