Fire officials are still piecing together the exact cause of an extensive blaze at a home in the west end of Bradford West Gwillimbury early Sunday morning.
At around midnight, Bradford Fire and Emergency Services crews were called to a report of a garage fire on Cassells Drive near Bond Head. Once on site, they noticed the blaze had extended into the main structure, causing “significant damage,” deputy chief Steve Hall told BradfordToday June 9.
He estimates the damage at about $1.5 million.
Witnesses said the home was recently renovated.
Another witness told BradfordToday they could hear an explosion from their residence more than a kilometre away.
“We are working off the information from the homeowners that when they opened their garage door one of their cars was on fire and flames were coming from under the hood,” Hall said Monday morning, noting the vehicle in question was not electric-powered.
New Tecumseth and Innisfil firefighters were called during the incident to provide mutual aid and shuttle tanker service, and portable tanks were set up to keep a steady stream of water flowing.
The occupants escaped safely thanks to working smoke detectors, Hall said.
