A small group of seniors gathered at the Danube Seniors Leisure Centre this week to play a German card game, Skat.

It was a throwback to the origins of the centre - formerly the Danube Counties Club, until club members gave the building at 715 Simcoe Road to the town of Bradford West Gwillimbury for use as a new seniors centre.

During the summer months, activities at the centre are scaled back, but members still come by to play cards - not just Skat, but bridge, poker and euchre. They also exercise or line dance, play snooker or carpet bowling, and socialize while staying out of the summer heat.

The doors are open Monday through Saturday, although the centre is closed for all statutory holidays. The centre will be closed Aug. 5, for the Civic Holiday.

Coming up in August: an Indoor Barbecue Luncheon on Thursday, Aug. 15, at 11:30 a.m., for members only.

Tickets are $10, and must be purchased in advance at the Centre. The luncheon will feature barbecued hamburgers, sausages and hot dogs, salads, dessert, tea or coffee. Members are invited to wear their very best BBQ aprons for the event.

The Danube Seniors won't be having their own booth at Carrotfest this year. Instead, they will be at The Elden Retirement Residence booth, providing information on activities at the Centre and selling Gwilly Pins as a fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House and Children's Charities in Toronto.

Don't forget to drop by, and make a donation.
