Postcard Memories is a bi-weekly series of historic views and photos of Bradford West Gwillimbury, a trip down memory lane every other Saturday morning.

This photo, of workers at the Bradford Carriage Works sitting on the steps of the plant, was taken some time between 1935 and 1937.

That’s when the long rambling building, located on Holland Street East, near Dissette Street, added axe handles and hockey sticks to a list of products that already included wicker baby carriages and straw mattresses.

But there was a limit on the production of hockey sticks for the NHL; in 1938, Bradford Carriage Works was purchased by the Central Casket Co. and began producing “Burial Caskets of Character.”

Bradford hockey sticks do still turn up occasionally.

Details from the Archives at the BWG Public Library, and Governor Simcoe Slept Here: The legacy of West Gwillimbury.
