East Gwillimbury Mayor Virginia Hackson is extending her short-term medical leave through the month of February.

The leave follows the three-month medical leave that commenced on Nov. 2, 2023, a town news release stated.

At the time, Mayor Hackson issued the following statement: “After very careful consideration, in consultation with my family and on the advice of my physician, I have made the decision to take some time away from my position of mayor. This is one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make because I love supporting the community and working with this great team. I trust that East Gwillimbury is in good hands, and I know that council and staff will work together to ensure a smooth transition and that the business of the municipality will proceed without interruption. I would like to thank the community, council, and staff for their support.”

Coun. Brian Johns will continue to serve as the acting mayor and as council’s representative at regional council.

Council uses an acting mayor rotating schedule.
