Every year, the Bond Head/Bradford Garden Club starts their Mother’s Day weekend plant and bake sale at 9 a.m. — and every year shoppers arrive early to get the best selection of annuals, perennials and flowering baskets.
Not to mention the tasty treats and baked goodies upstairs in the Bond Head Community Hall.
This past Saturday, both plants and treats sold briskly, although club co-president JoAnne Norton acknowledged the selection of potted plants was limited this year.
“The stuff is hardly coming up from the ground yet — and what is coming up, you don’t know what it is,” said Norton.
Chilly temperatures have delayed most gardens, although recent rains and milder daytime highs should bring spring flowers in the days to come.
“Hopefully we’ll do better for the plant auction,” which is scheduled for May 24, she said.
And hopefully, this summer will be better for gardens than the past two seasons: the ideal would be “warm, but not humid — and not too hot,” Norton said, adding, “I’ve heard it’s going to be very warm.”
Gardener June Calder also was not sure what the months ahead will bring. “It’s impossible to guess. Some say it’s going to be really hot,” she said. “I watch The Weather Network and listen to (climatologist) Dave Phillips.”
The next event of the Bond Head/Bradford Garden Club is the annual plant auction, May 24 at 7 p.m. at the Danube Seniors Leisure Centre, 715 Simcoe Rd. in Bradford.
