Campfires are once again allowed in Bradford West Gwillimbury, as the fire department lifted its fire ban Wednesday thanks to the recent rainy weather.

The town’s current fire rating is moderate, which is the second highest out of four levels.

Residents should still be careful if having fires, said BWG Fire Chief Kevin Gallant.

“If we get into an extended dry spell, we will very quickly get back into the same conditions,” he said.

Residents should make sure to have burn permits and keep an eye on the weather, he added.

“All you need is a gust in the wind … and blow some embers about, and that can result in a fire,” Gallant said.

Several years ago, he said, some residents on Line 5 had a fire in a burn barrel and the embers at the bottom were still hot the following day. The wind picked up and embers lit an eight-metre-long trailer on fire, which was spreading to a barn area when firefighters arrived.

“It can happen that easily. Make sure (the fire is) properly extinguished before you leave it,” Gallant said.

A fire ban in Innisfil was also lifted Wednesday.
