Several years ago, before coming to Bradford and Trinity Anglican Church, Rev. Dana Dickson hosted an Anglican Church Bonspiel, to raise money for charity.

With an active curling club in Bradford, Rev. Dana “thought it would be fun to do something here.”

She looked into renting the ice – and with the enthusiastic help of the Bradford Curling Club, the first-ever ‘Churches of Bradford Bonspiel’ will be taking place on Feb. 8, to raise funds for the Bradford Community Meal.

Eight teams from five churches – Trinity Anglican, Holland Marsh Christian Reformed Church, St. John’s Presbyterian, Holy Martyrs of Japan Catholic Church and Bradford Baptist Church – will be competing “for bragging rights and a trophy,” noted organizer Stewart Bond.

Games are planned at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and spectators are welcome to come out and cheer on their favourite teams.

There will also be a box to collect donations for the Community Meal.

The Bradford Community Meal, operated by the BWG Community Initiatives, provides a free hot meal to the community every Friday evening, at Bradford United Church. The meal is open to anyone who is alone, lonely, on a limited income or facing financial difficulty, and is entirely volunteer-run.

“We chose the Community Meal as a charity because it is something everyone can support, and we knew they needed help both financially and (with) volunteers,” said Rev. Dana. “This will raise money for it, as well as raise the profile – hopefully!”

A mix of curlers and non-curlers is expected at the Churches of Bradford Bonspiel.
