Gilford diners ask, Where's the beef? (7 photos)

The lure of roast beef and home-made pie draws diners to Gilford United Church

The hall at Gilford United Church was packed with diners on Wednesday evening, ready to enjoy perfectly roasted hand-carved Roast Beef, creamy mashed potatoes, peas, carrots, rolls and corn bread, served up by a line of volunteers.

Rev. Glen Eagle stood at the end of the line, ladling out gravy, as a parade of diners carried heir filled plates to seats at long communal tables.

For dessert, there were the home-made pies that have made the church dinners famous.

Unlike some churches, which have continuous servings, Gilford United asks diners to reserve a seat for one of two sittings, since space is limited in the church hall. Almost all of the seats were filled, and there was a steady stream of diners dropping in for "take out."

For those who missed February's Roast Beef Dinner, there will be another – in May.

In the meantime, Rev. Eagle, who has the charge of both Gilford United and Churchill United Churches in Innisfil, invites everyone to Churchill for a Pancake Tuesday supper on February 25. From 5 to 7 p.m., diners can drop in to enjoy pancakes, sausages and dessert for only $10 per person, free for kids under seven, as the church gets ready for the start of Lent.

More pancake suppers:

Pancake Suppers will be taking place at both St. John’s Anglican Church in Cookstown, and St. Peter’s Anglican in Churchill, Innisfil, on Feb. 25 – at St. John’s from 4:30 to 7 p.m., and St. Peter’s from 5 to 7 p.m. Enjoy sausages, pancakes, beverages and dessert, by freewill offering. Families welcomed.

The Knights of Columbus invite everyone to a Pancake and Sausage Supper at Holy Martyrs of Japan Catholic Church parish hall, 167 Essa St. in Bradford, on Shrove Tuesday, Feb. 25. Supper will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Cost is only $5 per person. All welcomed.
