Hearty meals, hospitality at the Bradford Legion on Friday night

'People love it!' says organizer Alice Organ

For the past year or so, Alice Organ has been bringing the flavour of Down East hospitality to the Bradford Legion’s Friday Night Social Dinners, with the help of Legion members and volunteers.

On Friday, she was back in the Legion kitchen, after a five week visit to Newfoundland, cooking up a social dinner of home-made cabbage rolls with sour cream, salad, mashed potatoes, carrots, Brussels sprouts, and dessert, for only $12.

Assisted by a small squadron of high school students, earning their volunteer hours, Organ cooked up enough to feed fifty, and set up an assembly line to fill the plates.

“People love it,” she said – the combination of a hearty, home-cooked meal, the friendly hospitality at the Legion, and a more-than-reasonable price.

There were 47 diners at the Halloween Friday Night Social dinner the previous week, and she added, “The Jiggs Dinner (planned for Nov. 20), we’re sold out already – and that’s a good thing!”

To help members and guests make their plans for the weeks ahead, the menus have already been posted for upcoming Friday 'Dinners with Alice':

Nov. 12 – Roast Pork on a bun with Hash Brown casserole, Caesar Salad and dessert, followed by Karaoke with KJ Ken at 8 p.m.

Nov. 19 – Ham and Scalloped Potatoes, bacon-wrapped asparagus and dessert.

Nov. 26 – Beef stew with dumplings, garden salad and dessert, followed by Karaoke at 8 p.m.

Dec. 3 – Pork Chops, mashed potatoes, carrots, turnips, dessert.

Dec. 10 – Christmas Dinner, followed by Karaoke. Tickets will be required for this special dinner; watch for details.

The Friday Night Social dinner is served in the Club Room at the Bradford Legion, 115 Back Street. Proof of vaccination is required.

Doors open at 4 p.m., dinner is served at 6 – a half-hour earlier than during the summer months “because now it gets dark earlier, and a lot of seniors like to get home before it gets too dark. Winter’s coming on, too,” explained Organ as she dished up the generous platefuls.

There’s a different kind of dinner coming up on Saturday, Nov. 13. The Bradford Legion is hosting its annual Veterans’ Dinner, at 5:30 p.m.  The traditional dinner of Roast Beef, Salad, Mashed Potatoes, vegetables, gravy and dessert will be served in the banquet hall,  following COVID-19 protocols. Tickets are $25 each, and numbers are strictly limited. Proof of vaccination will be required. To reserve a ticket, please call the Legion at 905-775-5025. Veterans who wish to attend, please contact the Branch.
